We're finally getting some much needed rain out here! It's been so hot and dry lately that the yaks spend all day in the woods. But the rain has brought some cooler air with it and the yaks were out in the field today. I walked out with my umbrella and you can see their reaction to the noises it made in the short video below.

Some information about yaks
For those of you who aren't familiar with yaks, here is a picture of some of the ones that we have on our farm. Since they originally come from the Himalayas in Tibet, they have thick fur to keep them warm. Of course, all that fur doesn't help during Virginia summers! In Tibet, yaks are raised for many reasons, a couple of which are for the milk they provide and for use as pack animals. My family is raising them for their meat which is is leaner and healthier than beef.
Yaks are grazing animals, but occasionally we like to give them a little treat. In this photo, they are all eating some sweet feed. When we shake the buckets, they all come running, kicking up their back legs and swinging their tails in the air, it's a lot of fun to watch.

Yaks in Powhatan
I live on a farm in Powhatan. The previous statement may not seem unusual, or even interesting, but I guarantee the next one will. My family raises yaks.
I have chosen to write about the adventures of living on a farm and raising these animals far away from their native home of Tibet. I won't exclusively write about the yaks, however. My family also owns ponies, dogs, and cats that often add to the excitement of farm life.
